On Saturday I was at the Columbus Zoo helping out for their earth day event. The zoo had us setting up in their activities pavillon. Inside there were probably a dozen different tables set up with different organizations like us, Ohio Soil and Water Conservation, Stone Lab, Sierra Club and more. Now, the event usually draws in between 15 and 20 thousand people, so I was expecting a busy day. However, due to the weather conditions, I think they got less than a thousand. So I got to spend most of the day talking with my mentor and the different volunteers she had set up to come and help. While it may have been a long day, it was a fun one. I really enjoyed getting to talk with my mentor and the volunteers.
On Sunday I went to Kenyon College to participate in their Earth Day event. This was a really cool event, there were lots of different vendors with things for kids, artist, garden lovers, and nature enthusiast. They also had a half marathon going on, and different outdoor 4H stuff. We set up our booth and got to talk to lots of people. We didn’t talk to nearly as many people as we did at COSI, but it was still alot. We talked to more adults than kids, and it was interesting getting to talk to the adults. They had a better understanding of what we were telling them, Tiffany also saw a few of her volunteers. It was cool to see Tiffany and the volunteers interact. She’s known some of them for quite awhile, and it nice to see the connections and friendships that you can make in this job. Overall it was a successful event and I’m excited to go to our next one. Next Saturday I will be at the Columbus Zoo, for their Earth Day event!
Today I went to COSI for their Backyard Science Day. My mentor and I set up a table with a display explaining what Stream Quality Monitoring is. We also had lots of bug samples to show to kids and families. When the kids came over we’d ask if they liked bugs and give them an easy description of SQM. We told them that it’s better to have lots of bugs in the water and that having lots of bugs is good for the ecosystem. It was a fun experience getting to show kids different bugs, that they have probably never seen. I hope I inspired some kids to think about science and keeping their creek clean. Next week I’ll be going to Kenyon College for their Earth Day event!
